Description

This milestone, located 200 metres east of the track to Stanhope Gate in Middleton in Teesdale, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of painted ashlar and stands approximately 0.8 metres high with a low domed pyramidal top. The milestone is set diagonally to the road, featuring the inscriptions "EDGE 8½" on the west face and "MIDN 1½" on the east face.
