Description
This building, known as the premises occupied by J.G. Forster and Ye Olde Horse Shoe Inn, is a shop and public house dating from the late 18th century, with mid-19th century shop and public house fronts. The public house is dated 1822, as indicated by the inscription above the door. The shop is constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar quoins, while the public house features painted render with painted ashlar dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has brick chimneys.
The building has two storeys with three wide bays and a left extension that is one storey and one bay wide. The shop on the left has pilasters and an entablature that frames a hardboard-covered door with a two-pane overlight. To the left of the door, there is a shop window with two rows of five panes. The first floor features paired sash windows with rendered jambs and a painted projecting stone sill, along with an eaves gutter board.
On the right side, the public house has a low two-panelled door located to the right of the centre, set in a raised stone surround with a stone-bracketed moulded hood above. The lintel is incised with "C 1822 I." To the left of the door, there are top-hung casements designed in the style of late 19th century sashes. On the right, there is one wide and one narrow window, separated by a short pilaster and framed by pilasters and a fascia with fruit-carved brackets. A cornice supports a first-floor canted bay, and there are pierced two-panel shutters to the left ground-floor window.
The roof over the two left bays has left and central banded chimneys, while the roof over the right bay has a lower pitch and a chimney at the right end. The left extension has a pent roof and has been altered from a two-storey building. The public house is included for its group value.
