Description
The former schools, built in 1877, are located on the south side of the A690 in Helmington Row. They are designed in the Gothic style and constructed from snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, a plinth, and quoins. The roof is made of Welsh slate, featuring stone gable copings and decorative ridge tiles, along with inserted ridge ventilators.
The building is symmetrical and consists of one storey with nine bays. The end bays are gabled, while the central bay has a half-hipped gable at the front. Lower porches in the second bays from each end slightly overlap the end bays. The left porch features a two-centred arch with a drip mould over a boarded door that has elaborate hinges, and a ribbon above the door displays the words "BOYS" and "GIRLS" in low relief. The right porch has a blocked door with the word "INFANTS" on a ribbon.
The end bays contain large two-centred-arched drip moulds over groups of four lancet windows, with plate tracery above. A central plaque in the tracery on the right is carved in low relief with the date and the words "BOARD SCHOOLS"; the plaque on the left gable has been removed. The central bay features a stepped mullioned-and-transomed four-light window, with two additional lights above. The paired windows in the intermediate bays have chamfered surrounds with tongue stops, and each gable peak is adorned with a roll-moulded apex.
