Description

The Vauxhall Tavern Public House is a public house dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, known to be in existence by 1814, with later alterations in the late 19th and late 20th centuries. It is constructed of yellow brick with a granite-faced ground floor, painted ashlar dressings, and a hipped slate roof featuring two ridge stacks. The building has moulded modillion wooden eaves and stands three storeys high, with windows arranged in a 3:1 pattern of 4x4.

The front facing Hessle Road includes a blank window with a keystone lintel, above which is a 9-pane sash window with a panelled lintel. Flanking this are two shallow 2-storey bow windows, each with 16-pane sashes below and 12-pane sashes above, all featuring similar heads to the central windows. To the right, there is a 16-pane sash window with a 12-pane sash above, both with brick flat arches. The ground-floor shop front has a plinth and a 20th-century wooden fascia cornice.

There is an off-centre blocked doorway, flanked to the left by two round-cornered single-pane windows with toplights, and to the right by a similar window. Further to the right are two doors with double overlights. The left return has four plain sash windows, while the right side has a blank wall. Above this, there are three smaller plain sashes and another blank area. The ground floor features a late 20th-century shop front with irregular fenestration, flanked on the left by a door and overlight, and on the right by a late 19th-century single-pane window with a toplight.

The interior was refitted in the late 20th century. The building may have originally been constructed as a public house or converted for that purpose when Hessle Road was turnpiked in the early 19th century.
