Description

The Alexandra Hotel is a public house built around 1895, designed by the architectural firm Smith, Brodrick and Walker, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with a faience tile ground floor, featuring terracotta and ashlar dressings, and has a hipped plain tile mansard roof with two gables, a single ridge, and a single rear wall stack. It stands two storeys tall with attics and has a total of 30 windows arranged in a 6x5 pattern. The hotel is situated on a corner site with an angled entrance.

The corner entrance bay features a canted stone bay window with three plain sash windows. Above this bay window is an ornate parapet topped with a shaped gable and pediment, flanked by octagonal columns with shaped tops. Below the parapet, there is a late 20th-century doorway flanked by pilasters, which includes an oval fanlight designed as a six-pointed star. Above the door is a swan-neck pediment framing a pedimented relief panel.

The main front facing Hessle Road has six plain sash windows, and above them are two large through-eaves dormers with close-studded gables, each containing a two-light mullioned window. The ground floor features a faience tiled shop front divided by pilasters, with a frieze inscribed "Alexandra Hotel." The central half-glazed door has a circular overlight and a swan-neck pediment, flanked by large elliptical-arched three-light windows with round-headed lights and transoms. To the left, there is a similar doorway with a star-glazed overlight. The blank left return has a terracotta relief panel displaying the name of the hotel.

The right return facing Ropery Street mirrors the shop front with two two-light round-arched windows, followed by a tile panel with a small window above it. To the right is a half-glazed door with a round overlight and a swan-neck pediment.

Inside, the hotel retains its original cornice and strapwork ceiling, etched glass windows, moulded doorcases, and original doors. The original mahogany back-bar fitting includes a clock.
