Description

The former City Temple at the corner of Madeley Street in Kingston upon Hull is a disused nonconformist church and adjoining hall, now serving as a drama studio. Built in 1879 by W Freeman, the building is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar and granite dressings, featuring hipped and gabled slate roofs with a single coped gable stack. It is designed in a Romanesque style, characterized by a plinth, string courses, a single coped gable, and moulded dentillated eaves.

The west end of the building has a recessed central gable flanked by square towers. It features a central wheel window set in an enriched round-arched surround with a hoodmould, and the inscription "City Temple" is located below the window. Above the wheel window, there is a small graduated triple lancet. Below, a pedimented doorway with granite columns leads to a close boarded door, and the tympanum contains two small round-headed lights. On either side of the doorway, there is a single window with leaded glazing and a hoodmould.

The flanking towers are three stages high, with plinths, string courses, angle buttresses, corbel tables, and cornices. The parapets are designed as coped gables, and each tower features a set-back four-sided slated spire. The first stage of each tower includes a pedimented doorway with shafts similar to the central doorway. To the north and south, there are two pairs of single windows, one above the other, each with hoodmoulds and impost bands. The second stage on two sides has a recessed panel with a corbelled head, containing a double window with a hoodmould. The third stage has a small double window on three sides.

The left return of the building has five bays with recessed panels separated by full-height pilasters. Each bay contains two windows with hoodmoulds on each floor. At the east end, the drama studio is two storeys high and lower than the main body of the church, projecting to the left. In the return angle, there is a 20th-century door. The left return features three pairs of round-arched windows on each floor, all with hoodmoulds.
