Description
The Fishermen's Memorial, located at the junction with Boulevard in Kingston upon Hull, is a memorial statue erected in 1906 by Albert Leake. It features a life-size figure of a fisherman made from Portland stone, depicted in a defiant pose. The statue stands on a square pink granite pedestal, which includes a plinth, cornice, and an inscription. The memorial is set on a stepped stone base. It was created through public subscription to honor three trawlermen who were killed in 1904 during the Dogger Bank Incident, when the Russian Baltic Fleet fired on a group of Hull fishing vessels. Ironically, this event led to improved relations between Britain and Russia.
