Description
The War Memorial Street Shrine, located on Eton Street, features a marble and granite wall plaque that was unveiled in October 1916.
This rectangular plaque is made of white marble and is attached to the side wall of 275 Hessle Road, positioned approximately 2 meters above the pavement. It is divided into three panels by two metal bands topped with fleur-de-lys finials, and each corner is adorned with intaglio carved flowers. The outer panels contain inset grey-blue granite columns that have torus and scotia decoration.
The names of the Fallen are inscribed in metal lettering across the three panels: the left panel lists three individuals from the Royal Naval Reserve Trawler Section, the central panel includes seven members of the East Yorkshire Regiment, and the right panel commemorates three men lost while fishing, including one from the RNRT.
The plaque features a moulded base that rests on a plain shelf supported by two moulded corbel brackets. The shelf's face bears gothic lettering that reads, "Father in thy gracious keeping leave we now thy servants sleeping." There are marks on the wall above the plaque indicating that it was originally topped with a scrolled pediment, which is now missing.
