Description

The Criterion Public House is a public house located on Hessle Road in Kingston upon Hull, built around 1860 with alterations made in the late 19th century and restored in the late 20th century. It features yellow brick construction with red brick and ashlar dressings, topped by a hipped and gabled slate roof that includes two ridge stacks and one gable stack. The building showcases polychrome sill bands, window heads, and a moulded cornice.

It stands three storeys tall and has a window arrangement of four by five. The windows are plain sashes, with those on the first floor featuring round heads and keystones. Positioned on a corner site, the building has a rounded angle. The corner bay contains a single window, with four windows to the left and five to the right, followed by a two-storey block with another single window. Above this, there is a blank window flanked by four additional windows, all with segmental heads.

The ground floor has a restored late 19th-century wooden shop front, which includes panelled pilasters, shaped brackets with segmental pediments, and a moulded cornice that extends along both frontages. A 20th-century corner door features a panelled recess and a curved overlight. To the left of this door, there is a large two-light window, followed by a doorway with a blocked overlight. Further left, there are two round-headed sashes, a larger segment-headed sash, and a round-headed blocked doorway, all with keystones. To the right, there are two two-light windows and two doorways, with a 20th-century door with a fanlight beyond, flanked by single round-headed sashes, all also featuring keystones. The interior was altered in the late 20th century, but some moulded cornices remain.
