Description

The Ferring War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1921 by local mason Francis Tate. It was altered after the Second World War with an additional plinth and base designed by Geoffrey Claridge.

Constructed from granite and polished stone, the memorial is located on the south side of the junction between Ferring Street and Sea Lane. It stands 4 meters high and features a rough-hewn granite Latin cross on the original rough-hewn domed plinth. This is supported by a later tapered polished stone plinth and a two-tier base, with the lower tier having a paving stone coping.

The front face of the original plinth has the inscription ‘IN HONOURED MEMORY OF’ followed by the names of five individuals who fell in the First World War, along with their regiments or arms of service, and the inscription ‘WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918’. The front face of the later plinth includes the inscription ‘ALSO IN HONOURED MEMORY OF’ followed by the names of nine individuals who fell in the Second World War, along with the inscription ‘WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE 1939-1945 WAR’. Additionally, there are 16 names of those who fell in the Second World War on the two sides of the lower plinth, bringing the total to 25 names.

The surrounding stone paving, the Garden of Remembrance to the south, the flagpole, and the two stone commemoration urns are not considered of special interest and are not included in the listing.
