Description
Leazes House is a villa, later used as a school, built around 1848 for John Henderson, a carpet manufacturer. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a roof made of large graduated slates. It has two storeys and three bays. The central entrance has a Tuscan porch with square columns that leads to a recessed half-glazed double door, flanked by side lights and an overlight. The inner door includes a fanlight with glazing bars. The building is defined by giant Tuscan pilasters, with the central bay recessed and containing sash windows with glazing bars, flat stone lintels, and projecting stone sills. An eaves band with paired brackets supports the wide eaves of the hipped roof, which is topped with tall stone chimneys. The south garden front on the right return features two canted bays, each two storeys high. Inside, there is an oval light above the stairwell and a renewed stair balustrade. The interior also includes elliptical landing arches and similarly-shaped landing windows, although some are obscured by an inserted partition wall. There are window shutters, with some obscured by work benches. The servants' stair has a plain balustrade and handrail. The building was empty at the time of the survey.
