Description

The Quay Walls and Pier in Falmouth date primarily to the 17th century, with significant extensions in 1873, 1903–1905, and 1951. The 1903–1905 extension was undertaken by engineer WH Tesidder and contractor EH Page, and a foundation stone was laid by HRH the Prince of Wales. The pier’s end was reconstructed in 1951. The oldest section, located on the north-west side near the shore, is constructed of vertically-set killas rubble. The majority of the remaining structure is of reused granite ashlar, set above rock-faced granite ashlar, with granite copings and steps. The open end of the pier is reinforced concrete, supported by concrete drum piers. The pier is built at a right angle to the shore, featuring a short projecting quay partway along the north-west side. Steps lead to the inner angle between the quay and are recessed on either side of the main quay. Above the small quay are two dressed granite panels with moulded cornices and rectangular pyramidal heads.
