Description
Volland House, The Forge, No 3 and Volland Cottage is a house that is part of a group of four estate houses. It features painted roughcast walls with imitation stone tiles on the steep eaves roofs and yellow brick chimneys topped with nogged caps. The building is two storeys high and includes a crosswing on the left with a side-wall chimney, while the main range has three gables above eaves-breaking casement-pair windows and three chimneys.
On the ground floor of the main range, there are three pairs of casement windows beneath the first-floor windows, along with a door in a porch to the left of each window. The windows are set in raised stucco surrounds, and the doors are made of board. The porches have yellow brick bases and timber above, featuring depressed-arched heads with tiny trefoils and herringbone half-timbering in the gables of two porches. The third porch is located at the angle of the crosswing and has a canted hipped roof. The sides of the porches are filled with trellis.
There is a lean-to on the right end wall that has a similar casement pair window to the front. The crosswing has deeply overhanging verges, with a casement pair on each floor and a small blank single light in the gable, all of which have hoodmoulds. The right side of the crosswing features a small casement pair within a porch at the angle to the main range. The left side has a side-wall stack to the right and a two-window range to the left, with similar windows and a door in a gabled trellis porch in the right bay. There is also a chimney on the left end gable.
The property has not been inspected.
