Description

Hendwr is a tall, two-storey house with attics, built in the Gothic style. The main body of the house is accompanied by two rear wings. It was constructed using random grey stone, with a roughcast finish to the front and south side, and has slate roofs. Square stone stacks with moulded bands rise from the roof. The house features gables with raised copings and kneelers, and has fine cast iron windows with diagonal glazing, set within segmental stone heads and stone sills. Generally, the windows are three-light on the ground and first floors, with two-light attic windows in gabled half-dormers.

The three-window main range has a central, gabled, two-storey porch. The entrance is round-arched with hollow moulding and small side-lights. Inside the porch is a half-glazed, panelled door with an overlight featuring diagonal glazing. Above the entrance is a three-light oriel window with a hipped rooflet, supported by four stone brackets, and a narrow, rectangular slit window in the gable. Ridge stacks are located on either side of the porch. Three-light windows flank the porch on the ground and first floors. Gabled half-dormers are present in the attic, the one to the left being smaller and incorporating wooden bargeboards.

The south gable end has a window to each storey. The south wing adjoining the left-hand side is single-window wide and features a ridge stack to the right. The north elevation is not roughcast and has windows with cambered stone heads. The north gable end of the front range has a window to each storey, immediately to the right of which is a half-glazed door with a two-light window above. The north wing to its right is two-window wide, with a central ridge stack.

The rear elevation has a central, gabled, timber porch, containing a half-glazed door with overlight. To the right is a canted bay window with a hipped rooflet, featuring small-pane wooden glazing. Three and two-light windows are positioned above the porch and bay window, with an attic dormer above the porch. The left-hand side of the porch is situated in the angle of the longer north wing, which has a four-pane window facing into the porch and a two-light, iron-framed window above. A large ridge stack sits in the angle of these ranges.

A lower, single-storey wing with an attic adjoins the rear end of the north wing; this may be part of an earlier house. The south side of this wing has a doorway to the right and a wide gable to the left, featuring a stone stack to the left end. The gable has a 20th-century metal-framed window in a blocked doorway to the right and a three-light cast iron window to the left, with a similar window above. Both of these windows have flat stone lintels.

The interior was not accessible at the time of inspection.
