Description

Hendwr Barn is a four-bay barn built from random stone on boulder footings, topped with a graded random slate roof. The gables feature raised stone copings and moulded kneelers. The barn has numerous ventilation slits in the walls, all deeply splayed and with stone lintels. The south-facing front has a central entrance leading to a through-passage, which includes a high narrow doorway with a flat head, part split doors, and corrugated iron sheeting. This doorway is flanked by two tiers of ventilation slits.

On the north side, there is a rear doorway to the through-passage, which is lower and features split doors with a timber lintel and large stones on the right jamb. A second doorway has been inserted to the right for a wagon bay but has since been narrowed; it features a planked door with a timber lintel set within a stone blocking. This wall also has two tiers of ventilation slits. The east gable end has four tiers of ventilation slits, while the west gable end includes an inserted loft doorway with a stone lintel and sill, along with two tiers of ventilation slits beneath.

Inside, the barn has three raised cruck trusses, all with tie beams. The west and central trusses have collars, while the east truss features raked struts. Each pitch has two purlins, and the detail of the ridge pieces varies. There is no loft. The through-passage has opposing doors in the second bay from the east, with some flagstones remaining on the floor, and the sides are marked by upright flagstones. A manger is located above the flagstones on the west side, with an opening leading into the west bays, which are undivided and have a further manger along the south wall. A stone pier has been built against the infill of the wagon doorway. The east side of the passage has corrugated iron sheeting above the flagstones, with a small planked door to the right leading to the east bays. The ground level inside the barn is lower than outside, suggesting that external ground levels may have been raised.
