Description
Rhyd y Glafes is an asymmetrical, three-bay farmhouse dating from the 18th century, with a rear wing. It is constructed of whitewashed rubble stone with a slate roof, featuring late 19th-century tile cresting. There are stone end stacks, one external on the right, and a stone ridge stack on the wing. The wing's ridge is slightly higher than the main range and has a hipped front where it joins. The front entrance is offset to the right and features double boarded doors with decorative ribbing, sheltered by a projecting stone canopy. The windows are two-light, small-pane wooden casements with stone lintels and sills. Two windows flank the front entrance, and three are on the upper storey, not aligned; the outer windows are beneath gabled half-dormers with decorative barge boards, the left-hand one having lost some glazing, and the right being smaller. The north gable end has no openings. A doorway is centrally positioned on the north side of the wing, alongside a 20th-century window to the right, both with concrete lintels. A two-light wooden casement is located to the upper storey’s right. The south side of the wing was not visible.
Adjoining the right side of the house is a cart-shed bay, built of rubble stone and covered by a corrugated iron roof, with double boarded doors to the front. This links to a further cart-shed and stable range, with double boarded doors to the left and a central doorway reached by stone steps; a 20th-century door is on the right. The rear of the property was not observed.
Inside, a straight wooden staircase leads to flanking reception rooms, with further rooms to the rear. The main room on the left features an early fireplace now infilled with brick, and a ceiling with plain joists, now supported by rolled steel joists. The room behind has a blocked doorway in the back wall (leading to the wing) and a ceiling with a chamfered spine beam and chamfered joists. This room provides access to the right rear room, which has an old fireplace with a timber lintel to the back wall and a blocked doorway to its right, said to lead to a lean-to. The front room on the right has a plain ceiling beam. Other details include boarded doors with carved decoration. From the top of the stairs, rooms lead off to the left and right, with a landing area to the front. The upper storey is currently open to the roof, which has tie-beam trusses, some with curved struts, and nailed purlins. The left-hand bedroom has a small Victorian fireplace; the right-hand room is lined with shelving. The upper storey of the rear wing was used as a grain store and has a sloping floor with a chute in the northwest corner.
