Description
Lord Nelson's Seat in Nelson's Garden is a Grade II* listed timber loggia that backs onto a brick wall and features wrought iron railings, likely topped with a lead roof. It has a small raised tetrastyle Corinthian portico with a panelled cornice decorated with concave reflectors, which were supposedly designed to capture moonlight. The roof is surrounded by a railed parapet supported by small turned balusters, although the decorative vases that were illustrated in 1860 are no longer present. The front of the loggia is enclosed by a wrought iron railing adorned with four large decorative roundels, with additional railings along the ramps and sides. Inside, there is a bench that incorporates an 18th-century chair, believed to have been used by Lord Nelson during his visit to Monmouth on August 19, 1802. This bench bears a tablet, last replaced in 1956, inscribed with 'Lord Nelson's Seat, August XIX MDCCCII'.
