Description
Burton is a building constructed from Portland stone, polished black granite, bronze, and glass. It is situated on a triangular site, which gives it a striking linear appearance. The design reflects the modern style used in all Burton stores across the country. The building has two storeys, which are separated by a wide fascia.
The front facing High Street features a large two-light display window on either side of a central entrance. The low stallriser, frieze, and fascia are all made of polished black granite. The bronze framed windows are complemented by a frieze that displays the names of towns where Burton stores are located. However, the original Burtons name on the fascia has been replaced by a name from the 1960s rebranding. The building has a curved end with a narrow window, and to the left of another door facing Nevill Street, there is a single display window. To the right of this door, a large black ceramic panel displays the word 'Burton' in its original script, highlighted in red lettering.
The upper floor is made of Portland stone and features five steel framed Critall's windows that are recessed within a stone frame and separated by minimal pilasters. Above these windows, there is a carved 'Burton' in the original script. The corner of the building, which is curved on the ground floor, is chamfered above and has a single window in a frame similar to the others. The Nevill Street front has three windows in a frame, with the outer ones being narrower. The building has a plain parapet, concealing the roof from view. A foundation stone on the Nevill Street front reads, "This stone laid by Raymond Montague Burton 1937."
The interior was not inspected during the resurvey, but it is noted that the shop interior has few important features visible. There is no rear elevation.
