Description
This is a lofted outbuilding located southeast of Whitehall Farmhouse, constructed from small roughly coursed stones and topped with a slate close-eaved roof. The building stands two storeys high and features five segmental arches along the front, three of which are blocked, with rubble piers between and stone voussoirs. On the first floor, there is a very large double door in the center, an inserted window to the left, and an original small circular opening to the right. The rear matches the front with five arches, a large central loft opening, and roundels on each side.
The north and south ends each have two arches; the arches on the south side are concealed by a later addition, while those on the north are partially blocked by stone steps leading to a loft door, with a roundel above. The south gable also features a roundel over the added range, which includes a door and two windows with red brick heads, as well as a square loft door on the south end. The rear has a square loft opening.
The ground floor was originally open and has square piers down the center that support heavy beams. The loft contains heavy roof trusses with tie-beam and collar trusses, some of which have cambered collars. The tie-beams are chamfered with stepped hollow stops, and the second and fifth trusses have collars only. There is a brick and timber partition under the third truss. The added range to the south has a four-bay roof.
