Description

The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel is a 19th-century building with a stucco front that is painted, featuring a Welsh slate roof that is not visible from the street. It has a rectangular, three-bay temple fronted plan, with the main elevation topped by a pediment supported by four Ionic pilasters with Ionic capitals. The front is two storeys high, with ground floor windows that are pedimented and consist of 9 over 6 pane sashes. At the centre of the ground floor, there is a wide porch with four paired fluted Ionic columns and capitals that support a plain entablature with a moulded cornice and panelled doors. The first floor windows are set in recessed arches and have arched heads above 6 over 6 pane sashes. In the centre of the pediment, there is a panel supported by scrolls that reads 'Methodist Chapel 1837'.

The rear elevation features two tall arched windows with 9 over 12 pane sashes, which flank the pulpit. The side elevations have square-headed windows below and arched windows for the galleries.

Inside, the chapel retains all its original galleries and pulpit, with ascending steps on each side, and is generally little changed. The galleries have panelled fronts and console brackets supported on Ionic columns. There is a fine organ from around 1900, complete with an iron railing and clock on the gallery below. The floor was raised by two feet in 1885, which covered the column bases and reduced the height of the pulpit. The ceiling is flat with a coved cornice and a central roundel. An inner porch was added in 1992, and the entire building was redecorated between 1992 and 1993.
