Description
The barn at Race Farm is a 17th-century hay or threshing barn featuring stone rubble walls and a stone tile roof on the front slope, with asbestos slates on the rear. The front of the barn is plain, with vertical ventilating slits on either side of a central projecting gabled porch. This porch has a timber-framed gable infilled with red brick and retains its original double plank doors. The exterior of the building remains largely unchanged, except for the recladding of the rear roof slope.
Inside, the barn has a central midstrey and a principal rafter roof supported by ties and collars. Notably, at least one tie is a reused 17th-century house beam, which features a hollow chamfer and run-out stops. The principal rafters are halved and pegged at the apex, and there are three tiers of through purlins. The main structural members are hand-sawn.
