Description

Race Farmhouse is a house dating back to the early 19th century, with a later addition from around 1830-1840. It is likely rendered over rubble stone, although the later section may be brick, and has slate roofs, with an artificial finish on the earlier wing and natural Welsh slate on the later. The house is arranged in a "T" shape, with the original section forming the vertical part of the “T” and the later wing forming the cross.

The original wing is one and a half storeys high, with a single-depth plan and a rear outshut. The east (entrance) front has a small, single-storey wing projecting on the left. This wing has one small-paned casement window and a single-pitch roof and projects from a small gabled wing containing the staircase. A plank door, covered by a tented roof, is to the right of the projecting wing. The ground floor features a 19th-century three-light casement window, and the upper floor has a later four-pane casement under the eaves. The gable end has two small six-light garret windows. On the west elevation, a single six-pane casement sits on the ground floor, while two gabled dormers, each with small-paned casements, are positioned above. A lean-to roof covers an outshut to the left of the ground floor window. A large chimney stack with two diagonally set flues is located on the ridge, where the 1830s wing joins.

The later wing, added around 1840, is asymmetrical in appearance, with two plus one windows, the rightmost one set slightly back. It is two storeys and attic height, forming a one-room-deep range that crosses the “T”. All the windows are from around 1840, featuring a canted bay on the left with one, two, and one lights; small-paned casements with a transom and a slated roof. To the right of the bay is a cross-framed casement with a dripmould (a projecting moulding over a window). A six-panel door with a rectangular light above is located to the right, sheltered by a tented slate porch. Above the door are two two-light and one single-light casements, also with dripmoulds. The wing has a hipped roof, wide eaves, and a single gabled dormer with a small-paned casement. A substantial chimney stack with four diagonally set flues runs across the ridge. The left return has a two-light casement on each floor, as does the rear elevation, although the lower one is truncated. A small, modern, single-storey extension is located on the right return, which is otherwise blank.

The original wing contains two rooms, with the entry and staircase in an unusual position – this may be due to the addition of the 1830s wing at the chimney end. The main, heated room features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and an L-shaped plank and muntin screen, possibly altered due to the change in door position. A plank door with a cranked head leads from the main room into the pantry/dairy outshut, which also appears original, with a large principal rafter and purlin roof, and slate shelves. The upper floor has a ceiled principal rafter roof with staggered purlins.

The later wing has a principal room on each floor, six-panel doors, but the fireplaces have been replaced. A plain stick baluster staircase is contained within the bay to the right.
