Description

The aqueduct over Dowlais Brook on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is a notable structure built from squared stone. It features two tunnels with segmental arched openings on either side of the canal. The aqueduct is supported by high stone embanking walls that lack parapets but include triangular piers on each side and between the tunnels. These piers have sloping tops and rise approximately 1 meter below the top of the wall. The abutments are splayed on each side. The arches are constructed with stone voussoirs that include raised keystones, and the walling is made of squared stone laid in courses. On the downstream side, the river is paved with squared stone blocks for about 6 meters, ending in a low weir.
