Description

Elim United Reformed Church and the attached Schoolroom are notable buildings with rendered exteriors and a slate roof. The south gable-front features a well-proportioned stucco facade, with the external render incised to simulate ashlar. A monumental flat-headed neo-Grec doorcase includes a moulded architrave with projecting roundels and a large hood-mould supported by elaborate consoles, leading to panelled double-doors. On either side of the entrance are tall round-arched windows with moulded architraves and aprons. The upper gable displays a stone tablet inscribed with "ELIM INDEPENDENT CHAPEL 1844," framed by a moulded architrave, with its base forming part of a continuous string course at the eaves level. The corners of the gable-front are accentuated by raised render, simulating quoins.

Attached to the right of the main chapel is a single-storey Schoolroom, also rendered and with a slate roof. It features an off-centre gabled porch with a round-arched entrance doorway, plain overlight, and a 4-panel door. A tablet in the gable is dated 1872. The front wall of the school includes three 12-pane sash windows with segmental arched heads.

Inside the chapel, double doors lead into a narrow panelled vestibule, which has a round-arched leaded-light window on the facing wall. To the right is a gallery stair, and to the left is a 6-panel door leading to the chapel. The chapel itself is a medium-sized, single cell with a gallery only across the entrance side, featuring painted woodwork. The raked gallery is supported by slender cast-iron columns and includes open-backed benches with the front made of rectangular wooden panels; the inner faces of the middle panels curve around a central clock. At the back of the chapel, attached to the panelling, are a pair of close boarded pews with shaped ends. The chapel has leaded-light windows with patterned glass, some of which have modern secondary glazing. The 'set fawr', pulpit, and rear pulpit wall are modern, contrasting with the relatively unaltered front end of the interior, which reflects the period's design.
