Description
Llanyrafon Mill is a water-powered corn mill, constructed from whitewashed rubble stone with some render, topped by a 20th-century close-eaved slate roof. The mill is oriented from northwest to southeast. It has two storeys on the northeast side and three storeys on the southwest side, where the water wheel and southeast entrance are located. The windows are small, featuring red brick cambered heads and late 20th-century glazing.
The southeast end includes a stone gabled porch with a broad cambered-headed entry that has a yellow brick head, along with a small ground floor window to the left. There is a large cambered-headed loft window in the gable. The southwest side has a rendered upper wall that is set back from the stonework along an irregular line, likely rebuilt after a collapse. The broad water wheel is made of cast iron with metal paddles, and its inner and outer faces are uniquely constructed in two half-round sections bolted together. The timber shaft was lost in a fire, and there is a concrete launder.
On the first floor, there are four cambered-headed windows, with the second and fourth being larger. The northeast elevation consists of four bays with four cambered-headed upper windows, all but the third of which are blocked. The ground floor, which corresponds to the first floor of the southwest side, has one similar window to the left and two windows to the right of a large loading door, all with stone sills.
Inside the southeast porch, there is a cambered-headed door with a brick head. The interior features stone flags on the ground floor, with no upper floors present. The roof structure was replaced in the 20th century after a fire in 1971. There are two burnt beams around the iron pit-wheel and two horizontal wheels, along with a tall cast-iron vertical shaft that has one wheel at the top.
