Description

The Former Unitarian Chapel is a notable building featuring an elaborate set-back gabled facade with an overall porch that aligns with the street. Constructed of red brick, it has pale freestone dressings, including decorative banding, and is topped with red tile roofs. The tall parapeted gable is adorned with finials and traceried panelling. Flanking the large 5-light sinuous traceried window are gabled and panelled buttresses.

The chapel includes a one-storey, 5-bay porch that has a crenellated parapet, pilasters, raised lettering, and a date inscription. The porch features cavetto-moulded segmental arches with hoods supported by corbels. There are original railed and gated entrances, with outer steps leading up to the chapel and inner steps descending to the former schoolroom. Below a cornice, an arched lower doorway is decorated with tablet flowers and shields, and there is a 3-light window above it. The entrances are further enhanced by arched lean-to roofs.

Inside, the chapel has a 4-bay layout with short transepts. A tall chancel arch features brick infill and pilasters. The segmental side arches are supported by polygonal concave-sided shafts and bases, which are topped with foliage caps and bracket corbels. The hammer-beam roof is notable for its arched braces and high collars with king-posts.
