Description

Capel y Traeth is a 19th-century chapel featuring a smooth rendered main facade complemented by rough-case rendered and terracotta dressings, with roughcast render on the side elevations. The building has a slate roof adorned with red tiled cresting and presents a galleried plan that appears as two storeys from the outside. The entrance is located in the gable end facing the street, which is the only side to receive decorative treatment. The chapel has two storeys and six bays arranged in a 1-4-1 pattern, with the outer bays slightly advanced, showcasing stressed angle quoins and balustraded parapets. Each level features narrow round-arched windows with moulded plaster heads.

The central range has three advanced gables that form the porch and entrance lobbies, with the wider central gable supported by an open porch on a cast iron column. The symmetrical outer gables leading to the inner lobbies have roughcast angle quoins and paired round-arched windows. These gables are topped with heavy mouldings and feature moulded terracotta panels in their apexes. Above them, there is a row of four round-arched windows with margin light glazing, connected by a continuous impost band. The central range is capped with a steep pedimented gable, with terracotta panelling filling the apex, and terracotta balustrading on the parapet that tops the outer bays. Simple round-arched windows are present on the return elevations on either side.

Inside, there is a horseshoe gallery linked to the organ loft to the northeast, supported by cast iron columns and featuring decorative wood graining and incised panels. The chapel includes box pews that curve around the pulpit towards the northeast, with two aisles. The set fawr and pulpit are elaborately decorated, featuring fretted panels on the set fawr and low relief lilies in urns on the pulpit. The enriched plaster ceiling has coving, with highly detailed central rosettes set within a panel of fretted woodwork, surrounded by simpler plaster panels and rosettes. The walls maintain their original lined-out plaster finish.
