Description

The building is a memorial hall, constructed in the early 20th century, displaying a distinctive blend of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau architectural styles. The exterior features roughcast render and swept slate roofs. The hip-gabled entrance front, facing the main road, is distinguished by polygonal turrets framing a shallow, segmentally arched entrance with paired doors. Narrow two-light mullioned windows flank the entrance, and a balcony with a bowed iron rail, supported by bold stone brackets, is positioned on the first floor, featuring a two-light French window. A central, canted turret corbels outwards above the balcony, displaying windows in its lower section and a clock above. High-set, two-light windows with central mullions are found on the upper storey, while battered buttresses alongside the corner turrets incorporate narrow windows on each floor. The return elevation facing Y Maes is divided into five irregular bays by battered buttresses; the central bay penetrates the roofline with a high-set hipped dormer over a four-light mullioned window. Other bays have similar mullioned windows of three and four lights below overhanging eaves and on the ground floor. A segmentally arched side entrance is located to the right. A similar side entrance, also articulated by battered buttresses and high-set windows including a dormer, is present on the return elevation to Lon Ednyfed. A separately roofed, single-storeyed hall, originally a billiards hall, projects from this elevation, featuring a canted bay and entrance angled to the main hall.

The interior incorporates a large main hall with a gallery and stage, accessed from the front via a circular inner hall, known as the Hall of Memory. This circular hall is flanked by vestibules and cloakrooms, with staircases leading to the gallery. A kitchen, committee room, and former billiards room extend from the main hall to the east. The main hall demonstrates a Neo-Classical style influenced by the Art Deco movement, featuring a wide, segmentally arched ceiling divided by plaster bay-leaf ribs with similar enrichment to rosettes surrounding vents. The raking gallery is curved in plan and features a modillion cornice and an acanthus frieze. Concave mouldings enrich the proscenium arch of the stage. The Hall of Memory features curved oak doors with glazed upper panels displaying laurel leaf motifs in stained glass, oak dado panelling, and a black and white tiled floor. Its walls are articulated by plasterwork Ionic pilasters and a beaded cornice, with a shallow plaster rosette in the ceiling. Between the pilasters are oak memorial panels commemorating those who died in both World Wars.
