Description

The Former Miner's Welfare Hall is a tall building featuring a gabled Romanesque front, constructed with snecked rubble facings and freestone dressings, topped with modern slate roofs that have bargeboards. The gable has a corbel-table that rises from end pilasters with outer scalloped capitals, connected by a horizontal stringcourse and a sill-band. An oculus with a chevron splay and hoodmould is located in the gable, with incised lettering beneath it.

There is a 9-light window band set within a Romanesque interlace design, featuring a taller two-order center window with a chevron arch-ring and nook-shafts that have scallop capitals. The building has three arched doorways, with the center doorway showcasing corbelled hoodmoulds, a chevron arch-ring, and nook shafts with scallop capitals, leading to plain boarded doors and tympana. To the left, there is a cut-down tower topped with a modern hipped roof and recessed panels.

In front of the hall, there is a terraced forecourt that includes the original outer gatepiers and ironwork railings on the side walls. The side elevation facing the Tramroad Site North features aisles with four 3-light interlaced clerestory windows, while the openings below are plainer arched designs, with a different treatment for an added bay.

Inside, the hall retains three-sided galleries supported by columns and a large blind arch with a corbelled hoodmould.
