Description
The Carnegie Library is a two-storey building with a basement, designed in the Arts and Crafts Modern style. It features a Portland stone front and a hipped Cumbrian slate roof that extends to wide eaves. The façade includes seven windows, each with three-light mullioned windows (two-light in the center) set in moulded architraves with leaded lights. Ground-floor surrounds are adorned with cornices and guttae drops, and the building stands on a stepped plinth. The central doorway, framed by pilasters, includes a fanlight and niches, all topped with a Tudor arch in a moulded surround. A flight of steps with coped flanking walls leads up to the entrance.
The side elevations are similar, and there is a one-storey extension at the rendered rear. Inside, the library retains a panelled and glazed entrance hall, a heraldic stained-glass window, and a dog-leg staircase, among other features.
