Description
22 Cathedral Road is a large, detached three-storey villa built in red brick, featuring Bath stone quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. Designed in the Jacobethan style, it presents a three-bay front to the street, arranged in a 2 + 1 configuration, with the right-hand bay recessed and containing the entrance. The left-hand bay features a three-light window on the ground floor, designed with mullion-and-transom, and similar two-light windows above. The main bay is slightly set forward and includes a five-light canted bay on the first two floors, adorned with a moulded panel between and a balcony balustrade above. The second floor has a four-light window with a king mullion and plate glass sashes, and the gable above is decorated with ball finials on the kneelers and apex.
The entrance bay boasts an elaborate recessed porch with columns, a two-light mullion-and-transom window above, and another two-light window above that. The villa features bands at different floor and cill levels, a modillion eaves cornice, and tall brick stacks. The right-hand elevation is blind, except for a two-light mullion-and-transom window leading to the hall, while the left-hand elevation has plain single and two-light windows. The rear elevation was not visible during the resurvey, but the house has been extended with a large modern office block attached at the rear. It has been converted to office use.
