Description
29 Cathedral Road is a large three-storey house built in the plain Jacobethan style. Constructed from thinly coursed pennant sandstone rubble with Bath stone ashlar dressings, bands, and quoins, it features Welsh slate roofs. The house has its entrance and longer elevation facing Hamilton Street and is paired with No 27, although the designs of the two houses are quite distinct.
On the Cathedral Road elevation, there is a tall two-bay frontage, both of which are gabled, with the right-hand bay set forward. The left bay has a ground and first floor 4-light bay window with a configuration of 1+2+1 lights featuring plate glass sashes, and the side windows have curved glass; this bay is topped with a slate roof. The second floor has a 2-light mullion-and-transom window beneath a coped gable with a pointed Jacobean finial. In the wider right bay, there is a canted bay window on the ground and first floors with 1+2+1 lights and plate glass sashes, while the second floor features a 3-light mullion-and-transom window. The steep gable is adorned with ashlar copings and a Jacobean finial.
The Hamilton Street elevation has both three and two storeys. To the left, there is a largely blind bay with a tall stack. The central single-storey porch has a balustrade over it, with a 2-light window on each floor. There is a gabled bay with 2-light windows, the first-floor window being a canted oriel. To the right, there is a two-storey bay for the kitchen, featuring a 3-light window below and a 2-light window above. The gutters are supported on modillion brackets. The rear elevation is plain.
The interior details were not available at the time of the resurvey.
