Description
27 Cathedral Road is a three-storey house built in the plain Jacobethan style, constructed from thinly coursed pennant sandstone rubble with Bath stone ashlar dressings, bands, and quoins. The side elevation features larger, coarser stone, and the roof is made of Welsh slate. This house is part of a pair with No. 29, although their designs are quite distinct.
The front has a tall two-bay gabled design, with the main bay on the left and the entrance bay on the right, where it connects to No. 29. On the left side, the ground and first floors feature a 4-light bay window with a configuration of 1+2+1 lights, fitted with plate glass sashes, and the side windows have curved glass. The bay is topped with a slate roof. The second floor has a 3-light mullion-and-transom window with a carved motif above it. The gable is coped and topped with a pointed Jacobean finial.
On the right side, the entrance door is framed by an elaborate surround with paired foliated columns that support a brattished cornice and a crocketed ogee head containing a fanlight. Above the door is a single sash window with a balustraded apron, and above that is a paired sash window with corbel brackets. The rear elevation has not been observed. The interior details were not available at the time of resurvey.
