Description
Penhill House is a two-storey, simple classical house dating from the 19th century. It is finished in stucco and features slate hipped roofs. The front elevation of the south-west wing consists of three bays and includes a tented 19th-century verandah on the ground floor, which has French casements. In the third bay, there is a flight of steps leading to a doorway with half-glazed 19th-century panelled double doors, side-lights, and overlights. Above, there are three 8 over 8 pane sash windows. The roof is hipped to the left and has a wall stack, with another stack at the junction to the right leading to a late 19th-century wing. This wing features a two-storey, five-sided projecting bay with windows in the front three facets, which include 6 over 6 pane sashes and a casement in the front ground floor facet. There is a doorway on the south side and an additional window on each floor to the right. The rear elevation has not been seen.
While the interior was not available for inspection during the resurvey, the previous listing description notes that the south-west room is said to have early to mid-19th-century architrave frames around openings in the south-east and south-west walls, panelled shutters on the verandah windows, and an ornately cusped and embattled arch to the alcove in the hall, with similar ornamentation on the flanking doorways.
