Description
Caynham House is a house dating from the 18th century, with an early 19th-century wing. The building features painted stucco facades, with coursed stone rubble and brick walls at the rear and sides, topped by a hipped slate roof and brick ridge stacks.
The exterior is three storeys high, with a two-storey early 19th-century wing. The front elevation has a three-storey, four-window arrangement, featuring 3/3 sash windows, 6/6 sashes at ground level, and 20th-century metal casements on the second floor. To the left, there is a stone portico at the entrance, supported by a pair of Tuscan columns and pilasters, which is now enclosed with multi-pane sidelights and a two-panelled glazed door. The advanced bay to the left is part of the early 19th-century wing, displaying a two-storey, single-window range with an 8/8 sash above a 12/12 sash at ground level.
On the left return side, there is a two-storey, three-window early 19th-century range with 8/8 sashes and 12/12 sashes at the ground floor, although the right-hand first-floor window has been replaced with a uPVC window.
At the rear, to the left, there is a brick, two-storey, two-window section with 6/6 sashes and segmental arches, partially obscured at ground-floor level by a lean-to extension. The central part of the rear features a stone, three-storey gable, partly concealed by a projecting hipped, two-storey brick extension, which is lit by an 8/8 sash at the first floor, a 6/6 sash at ground level, and a leaded-light casement in the attic, all with segmental arches. To the right is the rendered blank wall of the early 19th-century wing, which is covered by a projecting greenhouse at ground level.
Inside, there is a central staircase with a helical turn, featuring a pair of curtail steps and a gallery on three sides.
