Description
The Serpent is an inn that has been converted into a house. It features a 17th-century range and an 18th-century main range, with 20th-century extensions. The 17th-century section is timber-framed with brick infill and has a tiled roof, along with a brick ridge chimney and an eaves chimney. The 18th-century main range is built of brick and includes a dentil eaves course, with both hipped and gabled roofs. There is a projecting brick eaves chimney contained within the extension, and the main range has an L-shaped plan.
On the exterior, the 17th-century range acts as a cross wing. The front of the 18th-century main wing is three stories high and has a three-window range featuring 8/8 sash windows in segmental arched openings with brick sills. The second floor has three 4-light casements. There is a six-panelled entrance door on the ground floor to the left, which is set under a fanlight. The 17th-century framed wing is located to the left of the entrance. The right return side shows a 19th-century rebuild with a twin 4/4 sash window at both the first and ground floors, also with segmental arches and brick sills. A rear extension has been built in a similar style, featuring 20th-century casements in the gable end. The 17th-century cross wing adjoins the west side wall and consists of two bays of square framing that are three panels high with braces, which have been largely restored. This section includes restored casements, a dormer window, and doors. There is also 19th-century and 20th-century brick underbuilding at the front gables and the side of the main range. The interior has not been inspected.
