Description
This description covers a group of two memorials located one metre south of the nave of the Church of St Mary in Ashford Carbonell. These headstones date from the mid-18th century and are made of sandstone ashlar.
The eastern headstone is a plain rectangular slab set horizontally, featuring two plain inset inscribed panels with simple raised borders and projecting carved embellishments above each panel. It commemorates Edmund Matthus and his wife Barbara, who both died in 1770.
The western headstone is a plain rectangular slab set vertically, with two plain raised inscribed panels. It has a rounded head adorned with raised foliate enrichment and commemorates John Matthus, who died in 1781, and Elizabeth Matthus, who died in 1769.
