Description
This is a group of five headstones located approximately 2 meters south of the Church of St Andrew in Ashford Bowdler. They date from the early to mid 18th century and are made of ashlar stone.
The Dillow headstone, situated to the north-west, features a rectangular slab set horizontally with three linked inscribed panels, each topped by a raised ornamental carved panel that includes a skull motif. It commemorates John Dillow, who died in 1729, his wife Elizabeth who died in 1717, their daughter Elizabeth, and Sam Dillow who died in 1736.
To the south-west is an unknown headstone, which is a rectangular slab set vertically. It has a plain inscribed panel below a raised ornament and a segmental head, with the dedication unknown, dated to 1794.
The Taylor Memorial, located to the north-east, consists of a headstone with two linked inscribed panels, each featuring a segmental head. It commemorates Thomas Taylor who died in 1728 and Elizabeth Taylor who died in 1724.
The Chambers Memorial to the east has two linked inscribed panels adorned with ornamentation above and a carved head featuring a pair of cherub figureheads in the center. This memorial commemorates Richard Chambers who died in 1761 and his wife Hannah who died in 1769.
Finally, the Challoner Memorial to the south-east includes an inset inscribed panel bordered with a simple flower-head pattern, topped with a carved half-round head decorated with a wheel design and flanked by ornamented cylinders. It commemorates Thomas Challoner who died in 1727.
