Description
The Ashford Carbonell War Memorial is a village memorial dating from around 1920. It is made of a rock-faced boulder of green sandstone with an uneven outline, set on a stepped base and a rectangular platform. The memorial is located on the west side of the village street, in front of the village hall.
On the east face of the boulder, which faces the roadway, there is a recessed panel in the center with a raised surround. This central panel features a roughly-hewn background with raised ashlar carvings of a laurel wreath and a sword in relief. The top step of the plinth is inscribed with the words ‘IN / GRATEFUL AND HONOURED MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918’, with the names of the fallen inscribed below.
