Description

The Butts is a house located in Ashford Carbonell, dating from the 17th century, with a 20th-century extension. It features a timber-frame structure with painted render infill and a later painted brick extension to the east. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a central ridge stack with a 19th-century brick shaft. The house follows a lobby-entrance plan.

The exterior is single-storey with an attic and has a four-window range. The north side facing the road has three square-framed bays, each three panels high, with two-light casement windows. There is a single straight brace to the right. In the left extension bay, there is a three-light 20th-century casement window with leaded lights and a brick lintel. The house has two tiled gabled dormers, each with two-light casements. The right-hand gable end features square framing three panels high with straight braces and jowled posts, a two-light casement with leaded lights, and a 19th-century boarded door. The gable-end truss includes a straight tie beam, four vertical struts, and a collar with twin raking struts above. There is also a two-light attic casement framed by struts, with single trenched purlins visible under the restored projecting verges.

On the entrance side to the rear (south), there are three square-framed bays, each three panels high, with two-light casements in the outer bays and a three-light casement with leaded lights in the central bay. The entrance is to the left side of the right-hand bay, featuring a 20th-century plain boarded door. There are also 20th-century French windows in the brick extension bay to the right. Each bay has a tiled gabled dormer window with two-light casements above. The left-hand gable end has a 20th-century three-light casement with leaded lights and a brick lintel at attic level. The interior has not been inspected.
