Description
Ashford Bridge is a road bridge over the River Teme, dated 1797, with major repairs carried out in 1877 and 1970. It was designed by Thomas Telford. The bridge is constructed of coursed stone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring brick parapets and piers. It has a single span segmental arch that is 25 metres wide, with an ashlar extrados adorned with alternating light and dark voussoirs. Above the arch, there is an ashlar string course. At the abutments, brick and stone buttresses provide support.
The approach roads on both sides form a causeway, featuring round arches that decrease in size away from the main span—seven arches to the east and four to the west. The arches on the west approach have a brick extrados, while the east approach has stone voussoirs. The main span has a brick parapet with a plain ashlar coping, while the causeway has a rubblestone parapet capped with castellated rubble stones. A datestone from 1797 is located at midspan on the downstream side, and there is an iron plaque on the upstream side stating, "Renovated and partly rebuilt 1877/Thomas Groves County Surveyor."
