Description

Trevarthian House is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century. The building is mostly finished in stucco, but part of the front reveals rubble where the original stucco has been removed. It features hipped dry Delabole slate roofs around a central valley, with wide eaves at the front supported by shaped brackets. The layout is cruciform with a double depth plan, including a deep two-storey porch at the front and a projecting stair hall wing at the rear. The plan is wider to the right of the porch, accommodating service rooms. Reception rooms are located on either side of the entrance hall. The left side wall has a three-window garden front that was remodelled in the late 19th century, featuring bay windows on the ground floor and a five-bay verandah added. There are also 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed extensions flanking the stair hall at the rear. The house is designed in an Italianate classical style.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical southeast front that has a 1:1:3 bay arrangement. The left side has a blind bay with a later single-storey lean-to in front, while the second bay from the left features a two-storey pedimented porch. The right side has a symmetrical three-window front with a central doorway. The windows have moulded stucco architraves. The porch includes a wide doorway with a moulded doorcase and entablature, topped with a moulded cornice supported by carved consoles. The entrance features double three-panel doors with later leaded glazing in the top four panels and a rectangular overlight. The original 12-pane hornless sashes are present, including those on the first floor of the left-hand side openings and three of the first-floor rear openings.

The interior, which was only partially inspected, includes an entrance hall and stair hall featuring an open-well open-string stair with grooved stick balusters and a mahogany handrail that scrolls over the newel. There are also panelled doors, a moulded dado rail, and moulded plaster cornices.
