Description
Nos. 1-4 Llandaff Place are two pairs of semi-detached Italianate houses built in the 19th century. They are entirely rendered and painted, featuring horizontal rustication and quoins on the ground floor, with a smooth finish and some decoration above. The roofs are made of Welsh slate.
Each house is three storeys tall with a semi-basement and has significant rear wings, some of which have 20th-century extensions. The front facade consists of two bays, with a narrow bay on the outside for the entrances and a much wider central bay for the main rooms. There are steps leading up to the front, with a pierced balustraded wall. The porches feature square columns and semi-circular keyed heads, sidelights, and panelled doors with fanlights.
The central bay has a three-window canted bay, topped by a window with three tall lights and arched heads, set within a slight projection that has a dentil cornice above. Above this is a single window with a bracketed head. All windows are large plate glass sashes. The outer bay includes a French window with a bracketed head leading to a balcony over the porch, although the ironwork is missing from some houses. Above this is another plain sash window. The eaves project on large brackets and are gabled over the main bays. The houses have rendered multi-flued stacks and two gabled returns, each with one or two windows. The lower three-storey rear wings have similar small windows. The rear elevations are simpler but still feature sash windows.
One of the houses does not retain its first-floor ironwork on the bay window and has an extended rear wing. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey.
