Description

A pair of attached houses, built in the mid-19th century in the Italianate style. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with rendered sides, and have an ashlar ridge and end stacks, one with concrete tiles and one with slate. They are arranged over two storeys and a basement, with an original double-depth plan. The building has a four-window range and a symmetrical design, with a projecting central section featuring two shallow bays topped with timber pediments. The entrances are situated on the sides of the projecting section. The facade features faceted quoins, banded rustication to the centre, a moulded plat band, a frieze and an overhanging eaves cornice that runs into the pediments. The doorways have keyed semicircular arches with pilasters leading to an entablature and segmental pediment, with two-leaf, six-panel doors. Tall stained-glass stair windows are located towards the rear. The central bays have tripartite windows with keyed semicircular heads, the central window being larger, and feature sashes with curved glazing bars. The first-floor windows have keyed architraves over a panel with six-pane sashes. Similar windows are found on the outer sections, with a keyed segmental pediment on the ground floor. The stacks have corbelled cornices. Inside one of the houses (number 12, accessed from the right-hand entrance hall), there is a modillion cornice with vine leaves, an open-well staircase with turned balusters and a wreathed curtail rail, four-panel doors, four-panel shutters, and a marble fireplace with consoles. Numbers 4 to 14 share common plans and interior details, as well as many external features.
