Description

A pair of attached houses dating from the mid-19th century, located in Cotham, Bristol. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with rendered sides, featuring ashlar ridge stacks and a pantile hip roof with leaded dormers. They have a double-depth plan and are built in an Italianate style.

The houses are two storeys high, with a basement and attic, and have a four-window front. The design is symmetrical, with projecting wings and entrances on the sides. Prominent features include deep rusticated quoins, a pilaster strip to the party wall, a moulded plat band, a frieze, and a modillion cornice. The doorways are topped with keys and imposts to semicircular arches, featuring timber fanlights and flanking pilasters that lead to consoles and a cornice. Each doorway has a pair of doors with oval panels. Tall stained-glass stair windows are located towards the rear of the property. A late 19th-century porch with stained-glass panels is also present.

The projecting wings have tripartite windows with keyed semicircular heads, the central window being larger. Cornices extend from the plat band to the first-floor windows, which are set within raised panels with keyed, shouldered architraves and plate-glass sashes. Inner windows have 2/2-pane sashes. Timber pediments adorn the windows, with a 20th-century window inserted into the ashlar tympanum of the left-hand pediment. Tall semicircular-arched dormers with keyed architraves and side brackets are situated on the front and sides.

The rusticated basement incorporates semicircular-arched windows that form a balcony below the wings, with a pierced balustrade. A verandah connects the two wings. The stacks have corbelled cornices. The interior of the houses has not been inspected, but share common plans and interior details with numbers 4-14, along with many external features.
