Description

A pair of attached houses at Cotham Park, Bristol, dating from the mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar, with rendered sides, and have ashlar ridge and end stacks; one stack has a concrete tile, and the other a slate hip roof. The design is in the Italianate style, with a double-depth plan.

The houses are two storeys high, with a basement and attic, and feature a four-window range. They present a symmetrical facade with projecting wings and entrances on the sides. The detailing includes deep rusticated quoins and a rusticated quoin pilaster to the party wall, a plinth, a moulded plat band, a first-floor sill band, a frieze, and an eaves cornice. The doorways have keys and imposts to semicircular arches, with timber fanlights flanked by pilasters resting on consoles and topped by a cornice. The doorways feature two-leaf doors with oval panels. Tall stained-glass stair windows are located towards the rear. Late 19th-century porches with stained glass are also present.

Ground-floor windows have architraves and consoles that lead to a cornice, running into the plat band. First-floor windows are set within a raised panel with keyed, shouldered architraves, all with plate-glass sashes, and have timber pediments with symmetrical triangular panels in the tympana. A basement runs across the front, forming a verandah between the wings, featuring rusticated voussoirs to semicircular-arched windows. 20th-century dormers are set into the front and sides. Stacks have corbelled cornices. The interior has not been inspected. Numbers 4-14 share common plans, interiors and external details.
