Description
Three attached houses on Cotham Road, Bristol, were likely built around 1840. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with brick stacks, and have a roof that is not visible. The houses follow a double-depth plan and are built to a Jacobethan style. They are three storeys high with a basement and attic, arranged in a seven-window range. The design incorporates three tall, elaborate keyed and shaped gables; the central gable is the tallest, and the outer gables project with two-storey canted bays and full-height entrance blocks recessed at each end. Faceted quoins rise to a cornice, complemented by a wide first-floor band. Each of the side doorways has an open porch featuring square, flared columns with panelled sides and moulded bases and capitals. The porches have semicircular arches in an open frame, a six-panel door, and a mullion overlight. The canted bays contain mullion and transom windows with openwork parapets; they include cross windows above and 2/2-pane sashes below the transoms. The first floor windows feature plate-glass sashes. A plain doorway is located to the left of the central section, with a six-panel door and a rectangular plate-glass overlight, and a three-light window is to the right. Second-floor windows have decorative strapwork panels, and an ornate architrave frames the attic window. Plain 20th-century windows are located centrally on each floor. The building's interior has not been inspected. The overall silhouette is unusual and picturesque, despite adhering to a standard attached house plan.
