Description

Two semi-detached houses, now apartments, were built between 1840 and 1850. They may have been designed by James Wilson. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with a shallow, wide-eaved slate roof, exposed rafters, and moulded stacks to the right of centre. They have a double-depth plan and are in the Italianate style.

Each house is three storeys high with a semi-basement and has a two-window front. Windows have raised surrounds. A second-floor sill band, bracketed sills to the first floor, and a moulded platband at the base are prominent features.

Number 18, on the left, has a forward-facing gable to the right with a pierced cross at the apex. It has paired semicircular arched two/two-pane sash windows on the second floor, French windows with overlights and pierced stone balconies on shaped brackets to the first and ground floors, and an eight/eight-pane sash window to the basement. The right-hand portion of the house has a three/three-pane sash window to the second floor, paired margin-paned two/two-pane sash windows to the first floor, and a cornice at the platband level above an elaborate six-panel door flanked by small margin-paned windows with trellised grilles and a pierced stone balustrade leading up to the door. The left return has a gabled section with paired semicircular arched windows to the second floor, a six/six-pane sash window to the first floor, and a semicircular arched recess to the ground floor.

Number 19, to the right, has two three/three-pane sash windows to the second floor, six/six-pane sashes to the first floor, and dentil cornices over former French windows to the ground floor. It also has an eight/eight-pane sash window to the basement. A 20th-century block has been added to the right.

The interiors were not inspected.
