Description

A detached house, built around 1860 and now divided into two separate dwellings, South Audley on the left and North Audley on the right. The house was designed by James Wilson as part of a development in Park Gardens by E Pontifex, on land previously belonging to Victoria Nurseries.

The house is constructed from limestone ashlar with a shallow-pitched slate roof and moulded stacks. It has a double-depth plan, with a set-back service wing to the right. The main façade is two storeys high, with a four-window arrangement. Notable features include stone brackets supporting the eaves, which rise vertically to the eaves of a forward-facing gable to the left, this gable featuring a pierced circular detail at its apex and a cornice above the first-floor window. Two plate glass sash windows are centrally positioned on the first floor, opening onto a balustraded balcony above a porte-cochere. The porte-cochere has dentil cornices, panelled clasping pilasters, and semi-circular arches on three sides. A narrower margin-paned two/two-pane sash window is located to the front, while a canted bay with plate glass sash windows and a further two/two-pane sash window, belonging to North Audley, are situated to the right. A single-storey service block is set well back on the right return, with a hipped roof extending over canted corners to a central gabled skylight. A plate glass sash window is centrally positioned on the front, and in the angle with the main house is a single-storey porch with a balustraded parapet and a half-glazed door, providing access to North Audley. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
