Description

Greystoke is a detached house built between 1840 and 1850. It features limestone ashlar construction, a shallow-pitched hipped slate roof with wide bracketed eaves, and curved gables on the moulded stacks. The house has an irregular plan and stands two storeys tall with a stepped front and a projecting right-hand wing.

The exterior includes plain clasping pilasters at the quoins and a ground floor platband. The left-hand range has a six-over-six pane sash window on the first floor above a French window. The central range has a hip roof and plate glass sash windows on either side of the ground floor, with one on the first floor to the right. This range also features a former full-height flat-roofed porch with a cornice, a blind first-floor window, and Tuscan pilasters supporting an entablature, along with a leaded overlight above a blocked door.

To the right of the centre, there is a set-back range with six-over-six pane sash windows above a later single-storey porch, which dates to around 1880. This porch is positioned at an angle with the projecting right-hand range, which has Tuscan pilasters supporting an entablature and a coped parapet. The flanking half-glazed double doors have an overlight and a vertical oval window to the right and a return to the left. The projecting right-hand range also features paired plate glass windows on the first floor.

The house is noted for its subtle elevation and fine masonry, showcasing the creativity of the later phase of Italianate Classicism. The interior has not been inspected.
